 Re: Parole Hearings for:
Russell Carroll DIN#82-A-0199

A visitor to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. can view the name of Police Officer Robert Sorrentino, 101st Precinct, NYPD on Panel 32E, Line 13.  His name is listed with the thousands of other police officers who have given the “last full measure of devotion” to us all. Officer Sorrentino died in the line of duty on April 24, 1980.  While performing  patrol duty in the confines of the 101st Precinct, Queens, New York, Officer Sorrentino and his radio car partner were flagged down by the victims of an armed robbery of a private social club.  Five suspects had robbed and pistol whipped patrons of the club prior to fleeing the scene. Officer Sorrentino and his partner split up to pursue the suspects who had fled in different directions. Officer Sorrentino sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the pursuit. He was hospitalized and died as a result of his wounds.  All five suspects were eventually arrested and convicted of murder, robbery, and weapons possession.  Four suspects have died, but Carroll who was sentenced to 25 years to life imprisonment, has now applied for parole.

The release of Russell Carroll on parole would be a grave injustice to the family of Officer Sorrentino as well as society. The murder of a police officer is a crime that cries out for justice. In this time of great danger to our society, we must reinforce in the minds of criminals and terrorists that assaults on our police will merit not only swift justice, but with punishment that fits the crime. Absent the death penalty in such cases, life imprisonment is a fitting sentence.

The undersigned petitions members of the Board to deny parole of Russell Carroll.

Respectfully,
