CAMMARATA FOR NY STATE ASSEMBLY
NY State Assemblyman Matthew Mirones, (Republican 60th Assembly District)
has decided not to run for reelection in November. The Staten Island GOP has endorsed Mr. Anthony Xanthakis for the vacant seat. Mr. Xanthakis served as counsel for Mr. Mirones.
However, Joseph Cammarata, Detective, NYPD (retired)
is also seeking to run as the Republican Party Candidate. This will necessitate a Primary Election, Tuesday, September 12, 2006
whereby registered Republicans will decide who in fact will be the Republican Party’s candidate. Joe Cammarata
is a retired NYPD Detective and a veteran of the War in Viet Nam. Joe has remained in the Army Reserve holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is currently on active duty with the US Army and is due to be discharged in the near future. Joe has been a loyal member of the GOP and has supported the candidates of the GOP in past elections. His background in the military and police renders him an excellent candidate for the NY State Assembly.

On a personal note, I can attest to the dedication of Candidate Cammarata to all of us New Yorkers. His response to the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 enabled those of us retired members of the NYPD to contribute to the rescue mission at Ground Zero. His work with the American Red Cross and the New York State National Guard
assisted the retirees to maintain the supply cache at Miller Field and eventually at the former US Navy
Homeport on Staten Island. I know this because I was there. Actions speak louder than words. His
duty to his country and the City of New York during a lifetime of service is a record to be proud of. He deserves our support.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
There was an effort on the part of political parties to eliminate Primary Elections and to institute the Caucus System
here in New York. This question was placed on the ballot in recent elections. The voters of the State and City of New York rejected this proposition overwhelmingly. The Caucus System is in place in other States. That system would enable the leaders of a political party to name the candidates for their party at a “caucus” or meeting of the top leaders of the party. One could call the Caucus System, the “good old boy system”. If there were challengers to those selected by the leaders of the party, they would have no means to have their names placed on the ballot. The
Primary System enables challengers to place their names on the ballot by obtaining
signatures of members of the political party who reside in the district. With sufficient signatures, they would be able to challenge those who are currently in power in the party. This is DEMOCRACY IN ACTION. The voters of New York have revealed themselves to be quite sophisticated in political matters by defeating such a move.
Thus, with the Joseph Cammarata candidacy, we have an opportunity to show just how valuable the Primary System is to democracy here in New York City.
